Needle In My Haystack
I took another search job this week to keep me on my toes and build a separate business. My preference is to ALWAYS help individuals find job opportunities not find employees for companies. A friend was in need of some assistance so I thought I would give it a shot. She gave me two search requests. One for a Senior Database Developer and one for a Mid Level C#/Java Developer. The company has already hired an outside recruiting firm to find someone to fill these slots but they were turning up with only a few sparsely qualified candidates.
Since everyone knows I work the other way to find people jobs, my friend thinks I can find candidates when the professionals cannot. She must think I am a miracle worker. Why is this type of search so difficult? It is because of economics. If the supply of good candidates is good and the demand is good, finding someone to hire is pretty straight forward...advertise and get the word out. When the supply of good candidates is extremely low and the demand is high, everyone and their mothers are looking for them. Hence the situation I find myself in.
This type of situation requires me to put my "salesman hat" on. I desperately need this hat to work very well as I have to convince people who are not looking for a new job to consider my opportunity. The key is to make contact with someone who is not looking and try to convince them it is in their best interest to look when they are comfy cozy where they are. This is real selling and real challenging.
I am not sure if I can do it but I am going to give it a try. It is similar to the work I do when someone with a sporadic background is looking to change jobs again and they need help. This is a tough sell to the employer as an employer is not looking for a flakey worker but someone they trust will put 100% into the job for a decent amount of time. The sporadic work history doesn't provide much confidence.
The pre-moral of this story is centered on the uphill battle for the work I do. Whether you are trying to determine what type of career you want to pursue, trying to find a job or trying to find a needle in a haystack as I am doing now, you have to keep doing activities that have results over and over and over again. It is that simple. You have to know the reality of your situation and have to not look back, just forward. The word I use is perseverance. You just keep going no matter how difficult it is. It will take longer than what you expect most of the time. Stick to a plan and hold strong. I am doing it even though I might not win this recruiting race I am in. I will learn something great through it all, I know it. You will too. Just keep moving forward even if you have to take a step or two back ever once in a while. This too will pass.
