Resume Writer or Not?

Do you really need a resume writer assist you with your resume? This is a great question because there is only one real answer...YES. A resume writer will really help focus your #1 job search document. This document (resume) is your sales brochure. Have you ever received a brochure or advertisement from a do-it-yourselfer? I am sure you have because you can spot them in an instant. The spacing is off, the pictures are not always clear or the right shot, or the words are just a little off.

This is the first impression you are going to give anyone or everyone. Wouldn't you want it to be strong? I know I would. Most professionally written resumes are much better than those written by the job seeker. Most job seekers can write the majority of their resume, but the writer will polish the presentation up to shine like no other.

Who do you pick and what do you look for in a good writer is sometimes tricky. The best way is to ask around to your friends or family members and see if they know anyone who has used a good resume writer. You do this for restaurants in the area or where to buy something you want, why not for a resume writer.

What Are You Doing Tomorrow?

Here is a great lead in question to ask your casual friends...What are you doing tomorrow? The purpose of a question like this is to ask someone to do something with you. Never make it a big thing for them just a little one. Follow up this question with "I want to take you out to (insert favorite place here) Starbucks".

This is networking 101. Don't ask too much of your casual connection, just get to know them. Share your thoughts on your job and what you are thinking about doing and see where it goes. Enjoy their company and they might start to see you in a different light.

Wild Ride

Job searching is a Wild Ride. There are more ups and downs than a roller coaster. Enjoy the ups and expect more when you are down. The mindset of getting through it with more personal understanding is well worth the effort. Don't whine about the process but celebrate the end product. It will take you where your fears are exposed and reveal what you have been hiding.

Should You Use TheLadders.com?

There are so many resources out there to subscribe to for job searching it boggles my mind. It boggles it because you really don't know what works and what doesn't; right? If I were searching for my own job, what would I think? This question is one I grapple with each and every day. There are so many ways to find a job, which ones are the best.

Well I am here to provide a brief overview of online posting and specialized services like TheLadders.com. We have entered an age of computers conducting much of the "grunt work" to find good, viable candidates for a company. Now I am not saying the computers are the only ones doing the work. What I am saying is the recruiters and assistants working with them are using a variety of databases out there that are uniquely designed to find well qualified candidates. These people use a variety of techniques to mine the databases for candidates. Sites like Monster.com, CareerBuilder.com, HotJobs.com and TheLadders.com all have places to post your resume. Recruiters go to these sites to find candidates (and post jobs).

So should candidates use these sites to post their resume or does it open up the door to other services like multilevel marketing or sales or other jobs you really don't want? The answer is yes it does open you up for other calls. Even though you posting your resume online does open you up for these other calls, you still need to do it. You can do it discretely by only having an email address but you need to do it.

I highlight TheLadders because one of my current clients was able to secure an interview with a top tier biotech company this week by having his resume on TheLadders.com. A recruiter who is contingency with this biotech company found his resume and contacted him. I worked with my client to secure a telephone and eventually a face to face interview this past Wednesday. Now we are just waiting to hear from them. The moral is this...use the job boards to post your resume if you are a serious job seeker. You never know who might be looking for you but cannot find you. Get found.

Still Thinking About A New Job?

Why don't you start really looking for a new job, right now? Stop wasting time reading blogs and applying to a couple of opportunities on the job boards. Get serious or stop wasting your mental energy.

I really get frustrated with people who think about doing something but never buck up and start. It is sooooo much better to start something and fail than to never start at all. Do something new today!
